Silchar Sangeet Vidyalaya

Silchar Sangit Vidyalaya is a premier institute in south Assam. It was founded in 1940. The institution has a thrilling history. Saraswata Samaj-a revolutionary organization was operative to fight out the British rule in India with means of arms- uprising. But this revolutionary outfit remained in camouflage beneath the cultural activities including music, dance, staging plays etc in a bid to distract the colonists' eye from the principal objective of the outfit. But it came to an end when the real intent of it incidentally came to knowledge of the British colonists. The key members were imprisoned. Following the release of them under the leadership of Kamakhyapada Bhattacharya Silchar Sangit Vidyalaya came into being. Along side the classical music, the folk music and dances mainly of this region also included. Ustad Alauddin Khan, Udayshankar, Timirbaran like stalwart personalities in the world of Sangit graced this institution. Former Prof. of Shantineketan Nritya Guru Rajkumarsenarik Singha, former prof. of Bhatkhande Sangit Bidyapith, Lucknow, exponent of Folk Dance Dr. Mukundadas Bhattacharjee were also the teachers at it. However, folk culture, folk music and folk dance have found their niche here. Barak Valley including erstwhile Sylhet (the major part in Bangladesh) is indeed the hub of Bengali Folk Dances yet to come to the glare of publicity. These indigenous dances have their own niceties, differing in the major aspects from other folk dances in the country and abroad.
