Are you the kind of person who wants to have a bigger impact on society and children’s health? Are you the kind of person who relishes challenges? Are you the kind of person who’d love to work in an interdisciplinary team? Are you passionate about the wellbeing of children?
If you answered yes to those questions, then we might be the organization for you!
Community Empowerment Lab (CEL) is a community embedded non-profit research organization based in rural Uttar Pradesh. We have been bringing science to work for the most marginalized communities particularly mothers and newborns for the last 14 years. Our work has been widely published in the scientific literature including the Lancet and has helped shape state, national and global policy.
One of the major challenges we are currently working on, is taking a natural life-saving innovation known as Kangaroo Care (KC) to every home. KC is the most effective technique to save the life of a preterm baby. Globally less than 1% of babies receive KC. We want to change that!
About the Research and Implementation Science Team:
At CEL we have done some groundbreaking work on neurodevelopment of children and on accelerating the development of children in the first 1000 days of life, right from conception. Both of which were done with the help of the prestigious Saving Brains and Stars in Global Health Grants from Grand Challenges.
Our research has for the last 14 years focused on developing evidence based solutions to reduce newborn and maternal mortality and accelerate the development of children. In order to meet the kind of challenges which we tackle at CEL, it is very important for us to be embedded within the communities that we work with. That is one major reason why our Lab is not in a metropolis but in the trenches.
We believe that in order to come up with innovations that have the most impact, our team needs to be an interdisciplinary one working at the cross sections of both the disciplines and people, the global and the local. The team consists of people from a range of disciplines and personal backgrounds like computer engineering, medicine, psychology, cognitive science, all working on the challenges together.
In your role with the team, you will need to work to understand the most common health and development challenges being faced by the infants and children within the rural community settings and help design solutions to address them at a systemic level. You will always put the interests and welfare of the children foremost and will drive the initiatives to implement systems for their better care and upbringing backed by the latest research in the global world of pediatrics and newborn care.
In addition to your medical certification in pediatrics preferably from a top tier institution, you will also need to bring the following to the table:
Have a love for children.
Have immense patience and empathy.
Be able to communicate very well across age groups.
Being open to explore and actively seek to venture out of your comfort zone. This is not a role for those who wish to sit in an office all day.
Observe situations dispassionately and document observations meticulously.
Be self driven. CEL is not a place where someone will run after you with a stick. It is expected that after getting a hang of things, you are able to drive your work forward.
Curiosity. You will need to have a desire to learn and understand more about the context in which newborns, infants and children grow and develop in the villages where we work.
A growth mindset ie. you believe that there are always things you can learn and skills you can pick up based on the challenges you face and you actively do so yourself. You do NOT believe that because you have your medical degree now, that all your learning is finished. Pediatrics is a field that is constantly growing through new research and learnings and so you must remain at the cutting edge.
Practice Extreme Ownership ie. you do not seek to point fingers when things go wrong, instead you accept that things went wrong AND suggest a plan for fixing it.
Be willing to do small things and do them well because small things done well lead to big things done well.
Some basic formalities:
Remuneration: Very competitive and negotiable.
Location: rural Uttar Pradesh, based in our main research and field site at Shivgarh. Will also spend some time in Lucknow where we have our technology and administrative site.
