About the Organization

Howrah Child Welfare Project is an educational project based in Howrah district of West Bengal. It is supported by Non-Governmental Organizations. It aims to create educational opportunities for child labourers and children from extremely poor families in Howrah, so that they can become independent and are able to stand on their own feet. To help them break out of the vicious circle of poverty and lack of education, special support for these families is provided on many levels including after-school tuition, health-related guidance, counselling and overall well-being for the children and other social support for their families. The focus is to provide excellent education and overall development for each child; to guide and support them throughout their growing-up stages until they can develop a career and become independent.

 

About the Role: Social Worker (Counselling)

Female candidates will be preferred.

 

We are seeking a compassionate and skilled individual to join our team as a Social Worker (Counselling). As a Counsellor, you will play a vital role in supporting children and families facing various challenges such as behavioural issues, school absences, and the risk of dropping out. Your expertise will guide all stakeholders involved, including children, families, and staff, towards resolutions that promote sustainable solutions.

 

Location: Howrah, West Bengal

Timing: 10am – 6pm, Mon-Sat (5.5 days a week)

 

Core responsibilities include:

• Provide individual counselling sessions to children, utilizing evidence-based techniques and interventions tailored to their specific needs.

• Engage families in the counselling process, facilitating family sessions to improve communication, understand family dynamics, and develop strategies for support at home.

• Conduct comprehensive assessments to understand the nature and extent of critical issues affecting children and families.

• Monitor the progress of children, regularly evaluate intervention effectiveness, and make adjustments as needed.

Outreach responsibilities include:

• Visit families and build rapport to establish a supportive relationship with children and their families, fostering trust and open communication.

• Provide appropriate referrals and resources to support children and families outside of counselling sessions.

• Coordinate with other professionals when necessary, ensuring comprehensive and specialized support is provided.

Collaborative responsibilities include:

• Collaborate closely with project staff, including teachers and Social Workers, to address school-related issues and develop appropriate interventions.

• Collaboratively set goals with all stakeholders to address the identified concerns and expectations and involve them in the resolution process.

 

Qualifications & Experiences:

• Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.

• Knowledge of evidence-based counselling techniques and interventions.

• Collaborative approach, working effectively with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams.

• Empathy, compassion, and sensitivity towards the challenges faced by children and families.

• Knowledge of ethical guidelines and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with diverse populations.

• Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.

• Flexibility and adaptability to work in dynamic and challenging situations.

Relevant experience in counselling children and families dealing with critical issues will be preferred – like behavioural problems, school absences, and assessment of dropout risks.

 

Skills & Competencies

• Fluency in English and Hindi

• Fluency in Bengali will be an added advantage.

• Willingness to work on a social educational project for underprivileged children.

• Open-mindedness, desire to learn and adapt.

• Takes initiative and can work independently and in teams.

 

Remuneration:

The salary range typically falls between Rs.18,000 – Rs.22,000 per month depending on the education/experience level of the candidate.

 

The final salary will also depend on the performance evaluation of the candidate by recruiters in the interview/group discussion rounds.
