Communications Manager (Consultant) – India Program, New Delhi, India
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. NRDC uses law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and the staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, the staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and environmental specialists have worked to protect the world's natural resources, public health, and the environment in countries and regions including the United States, China, India, Canada, Mexico, Chile, and the European Union.

In India for over 10 years now, NRDC has been a thought leader and trusted adviser to the partners within the country. NRDC has partnered with premier experts – including national, state, and local governments – to advance cutting-edge scientific and policy research, analysis, and innovations in three interconnected areas – clean energy transition, electric mobility, and climate resilience and health.

Position Summary

NRDC seeks a full- time consultant as a Communications Manager to support the India program in our New Delhi office. The Communications Manager will work closely with a group of NRDC consultants working to advance clean energy and climate solutions in India, including initiatives on renewable energy, clean transportation, and public health. The position focuses on developing and implementing communications for internal and external audiences including partners, stakeholders, businesses, and media.

The Communications Manager will be responsible for crafting effective and impactful communications strategies for the team in India and manage external-facing communications channels. The expert will work to grow NRDC’s brand in India and generate high recall value on social and traditional media for the India program work with guidance from NRDC’s communications team as required.

Key Job Responsibilities :

• Develop communications plans for key NRDC publications and events
• Draft and edit press releases, social media posts, op-eds, and newsletters
• Help team members write and proof-read/edit reports, blogs, factsheets and other internal/external publications
• Create interactive tools and infographics as required
• Prepare, coordinate, and communicate activities related to online webinars, virtual events, and live conferences such as preparing promotional materials, facilitating the webinars and ensuring effective media coverage
• Manage India Team social media platforms and media coverage including developing and maintaining a media calendar, content publishing, responding to audience comments/messages, and performance tracking
• Write and optimise content for the website and provide support towards website maintenance with external vendors
• Work with vendors on videos and photography

Education & Qualifications :

• Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Communications/Journalism/ Political Science, International Relations/ Public Affairs, Marketing, Business/Finance.
• 5 or more years’ experience in corporate communications, international relations, public affairs, political science, or another related field. Relevant experience with an organization working for environmental cause, Climate Change, renewable energy, clean transportation is preferred

Must Haves :

• Basic familiarity with design and audio-visual software, i.e. Canva, or the Adobe suite
• Work in a fast-paced environment with demonstrated ability to work in entrepreneurial fashion, handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure
• Open-mindedness, flexibility, and an eagerness to take on challenging work
• Ability to work independently, follow organizational procedures and perform accurately under deadlines
• Self-directed with the ability to prioritize, plan, manage and follow through on multiple tasks
• Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal
• Experience working with non-profits and international organizations, and willingness to sometimes work across time zones
• Has an existing media network and social media management experience, experience developing a brand identity and driving engagement across social and traditional media preferred
• Experience in developing videos and photography and liaising with AV vendors
• Proficiency in English as well as an additional Indian language is preferred
