Project Background:
Menstruation is a normal biological phenomenon. However, various socio-cultural and infrastructural limitations limit the ability of girls and women to practice safe and effective Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM). This, in turn, makes them susceptible to adverse health conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTI), psycho-social stress, gender-based violence, and contributes to absenteeism from school and the workplace. To develop a holistic MHM program, it is important to understand the current knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to menstruation with regards to myths and misconceptions, access, use, and disposal of products for women and their influencers. In addition, for safe and effective MHM, it is necessary to have access to different types of products and infrastructure; i.e. absorbent products, MHM friendly WASH facilities, and appropriate waste management infrastructure. Hence, it is also important to understand industry trends and how it responds to the needs of girls and women, as well as barriers to
accessing community/institutional infrastructure. As a part of an integrated approach of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH); an intervention to address issues of poor menstruation and its impact on the overall well-being of women and adolescent girls was designed and implemented through a multi-state program in Phase I. Phase 2 of the project aims to scale up the interventions on the promotion of safe and sustainable menstrual hygiene management practices among women and adolescent girls. Further, the program will focus on breaking the silence around social taboos associated with menstruation topics by mobilizing men, boys, community leaders, teachers, and health care workers to build supportive environments where menstruators can advocate for their needs and reclaim agency over their bodies.
