NGO gives wings to govt school kids' dreams

Since childhood, Shekar , 15, nursed the dream of becoming a chef. But he knew with his modest means, it was going to be far from easy. Son of a daily-wage worker and student of a government school in Adugodi, Shekar felt helpless when he saw his father toil to feed him and his six siblings. On his birthday, the boy received the best gift he could have asked for - a chance to be mentored by chef Ramaswamy Selvaraju at Vivanta by Taj.
Thanks to Akshaya Patra Foundation, government school children are getting an opportunity to chase their dreams. Under the initiative Giving Every Dream a Cha nce, the NGO not only sponsors programmes to ensure continued support to children but also provides mentors to hone their skills.
"Now I know how to start the oven, use the gas stove and choose the appropriate ingredients, spices and taste enhancers. I have also learnt how to garnish the dish and lay plates on the table. Already, I feel much closer to realizing my dream," said an ecstatic Shekar.
