The state may have announced a proposed law to mandate that all designated open spaces in the city be maintained by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) without the involvement of private agencies, but several prominent politicians who currently control large recreation grounds and playgrounds under the previous adoption arrangement look set to retain control of these plots.
The list of 27 such public plots of land that will not be taken back by the BMC shows that many of these are controlled by prominent groups.
The list includes St Xavier?s grounds in Parel maintained by the Mumbai District Football Association and chaired by Yuva Sena chief Aditya Thackeray. It also includes two plots ? Swatantra Veer Sawarkar Udyan in Borivli and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Kridangan in Kandivli ? maintained by the Poisar Gymkhana under the guidance of BJP MP Gopal Shetty.
