Job Description

Samaj Pragati Sahayog (SPS) is headquartered in a drought-prone, tribal area of Madhya Pradesh. It is one of India's largest non-government initiatives for water, livelihoods, and women’s empowerment. SPS believes that to address India’s long-standing problems, we must graduate to an alternative development model based on the principles of equity, sustainability, and people’s empowerment.

As a part of our country’s commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, One indicator is to ensure that the newborn death rate is less than 10 per 1000 births per year. With the support of the Indian council of Medical Research, 10 districts where death rates among newborns have been worryingly high have pledged to work to achieve this goal in 3 years, starting Jan 2024. Khargone in southwestern Madhya Pradesh is one such district where the SANKALP Implementation Research (IR) project is being done by Samaj Pragati Sahayog, Dewas-Khargone in association with AIIMS new Delhi and the Government Medical College, Chandigarh and Jhpeigo, India. We are looking for passionate public health practitioners and researchers to join us in this IR project for 2.5 years, starting March 15, 2024.

Research Officer

Based at Khargone, MP

Responsibilities:

• Support operational /implementation research activities - developing protocols, coordinating field data collection for testing hypotheses and documenting results

• Support the programs for accurate and timely data collection, collation and analysis pertaining to IR

• Develop and implement procedure for effective data management, data sharing and data analysis

• Support field offices in data quality checks, documentation and analyzing reports for dissemination

• Manage all incoming data files per Jhpiego rules

• Assist the team by analyzing and deep diving in data for timely decision making as well as evidence generation

• Undertake regular visits to the field to support IR activities and to identify where adaptations might be needed.

• Support in documentation of various project result, processes and development of success stories and fact sheet for strategic sharing and dissemination.

• Support the development of publications for peer reviewed, high impact international journals

• Manage organization of Writing Workshops, Webinars, Journal Clubs to prompt participation of field staff in writing scientific manuscripts, review articles and program abstracts

Abilities/Skills:

• Ability to analyze.

• Attentive to details.

• Ability to produce documents and reports of professional quality and coordinate activities independently.

• Fluency in spoken and written English and Hindi required

• Experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research

• Computer skills demonstrating competency in MS Office Suite and at least one statistical package such as SPSS or STATA.

• Ability to multi task and work in a multi-cultural team.

• Ability to develop productive working relationships with other agencies, stakeholders and other organizations.

• Excellent organizational skills.

• Ability to travel up to 40% of the time.

Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge:

• Bachelors in any stream with Masters in Epidemiology, Statistics or Public Health is essential.

• 5-7 years of relevant professional experience of working with international health programs/ organizations especially in the field of Monitoring, Evaluation and Research related activities.

• At least two years of experience in supporting operational /implementation research protocols and conducting surveys and data collection in the health sector.

• Understanding of Global Health and development approaches with willingness to learn the technical side of program implementation.

• Publications in high impact peer reviewed journals
