Position: Laboratory Technician

Location of Job: Patna

Duration : 12 months (Renewable)

PURPOSE OF POST:

Perform clinical laboratory activities according to MSF protocols, security, and hygiene measures in order to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINES :

Hierarchically accountable to the Laboratory Technician Supervisor / Laboratory Activity Manager Functionally accountable to the Laboratory Technician Supervisor / Laboratory Activity Manager

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Responsible for Performing any specified laboratory tests by following the protocol and procedures

• To perform all clinical tests following strictly the procedures.

• To execute periodical cleaning, calibration and quality control for all lab material, according to protocols.

• Responsible for, or assisting the supervisor in, assessing or evaluating the laboratory facilities and equipment.

• Registration and keeping all records related to laboratory.

• Produce periodical reports of lab activity.

• Follow and respect of universal precautions.

• Participation on research according to the needs and requests of the GGSH project.

• Properly communication to patients and relatives about the execution of tests procedures.

CONTEXT SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Take blood samples from project IPD and OPD levels following the protocols and safety precautions.

• Smearing and staining procedures of specimens.

• Centrifuge blood samples and separate serum/plasma for analysis.

• Centrifuge urine samples for microscopic analysis.

• Receive samples and to check that the labeling coincide with the information in the lab register book.

• To explain the procedure to the patients on how to collect samples.

• Preparation of reagents and media following lab SOP.

• To perform test on GeneXpert machine.

• Responsible for following and respecting standard universal precautions and implementing them in the daily routine of the lab.

• Washing general glassware after procedures are done.

• Proper discard of contaminated materials and separation of waste in the laboratory.

• Sterilization of materials.

• To maintain organized a filing system with laboratory results, stock and other files as specified by supervisor.

• Register the patient in the register books specifying name, address, and tests to be performed.

• Produce written lab results and explain or communicate clearly any anomaly found in analysis.

• Responsible for the preparation of various laboratory reports. Assist the supervisor to produce a general lab report.

• To provide monthly lab reports about the activities.

• Responsible for sending the lab standard indicator report to Capital and Head office.

• Responsible for making the request for laboratory material and reagents on weekly and monthly basis and obtaining the requisite approval from the supervisor.

• Responsible for preparing laboratory supplies for field work;

• Responsible for informing the supervisor and in case of dysfunction of any material or equipment;

• Responsible for providing assistance for the successful execution of the different MSF team meetings (lab team meetings, general team meetings etc.).

• Responsible for the monitoring the cold chain required for laboratory reagents and kits in the office and also in the clinic site and reporting to the supervisor in case of cold chain rupture.

• Responsible for sample preparation and transportation to reference lab.

• Responsible for sample preparation for quality control to reference lab.

• To ensure that there are no stock rupture of lab items and inform supervisor well in advance if any

• Maintain inventory of lab items.

• Responsible for translation of lab information to the international doctors, when required;

Other Responsibilities :

• To perform any other lab related tasks as required by your supervisor.

• To maintain a flexible approach and responding to the needs of the project, even if they fall out of this job description.

• To respond to any emergency intervention, if requested, out of the regular project activities.

• To train MSF and MOH staff basic lab procedures if required.

REQUIREMENTS :

Education: Essential Laboratory Technician / Pathology diploma /degree

Experience:

• Essential Minimum 1-year experience of working in main laboratory facilities.

• Desirable Minimum 1 year of experience working with MSF/DWBI

• Desirable experience with hospitals, clinics, healthcare centers, or other NGOs

Languages: Essential understanding of basic English as mission language, Thorough understanding of local Language Knowledge: Basic understanding of MS Office especially Word, Excel & PowerPoint
