Job Description

Assignment: To edit the Manual on Boys' Engagement in Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH)

Background and purpose of the manual

Patang, a nonprofit organization established in 2003, aimed to create a space for young people in Western Odisha. Over time, it has established a Youth and Education Resource Center (YERC) with various programs fostering youth leadership in the eastern region of India. Since its inception, Patang has focused on promoting "Gender Equality." However, a specific initiative addressing Gender and Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR) began with a grant from the Youth Innovation Fund (YIF), National Foundation for India, in 2014.

In our efforts to promote gender equality among marginalized communities, we recognized the importance of engaging young boys to challenge societal norms in villages around Sambalpur. However, working with young boys and men and duty bearers was easier said than done. There was a noticeable absence of platforms to discuss SRHR issues, leaving young boys grappling with questions about bodily changes, love, relationships, sexuality, and marriage. Additionally, there was a lack of support from NGOs to nurture and guide them toward their goals, leading to their exploitation by various entities for narrow objectives. Over the past six years, Patang has cultivated youth gender champions through initiatives like mixed-gender football tournaments, online gender champion courses, and adolescent fairs. Now, we seek to consolidate our efforts into a manual to support ongoing training sessions with young boys.

This manual will be designed to offer comprehensive guidance and resources for facilitating discussions and activities related to SRH among boys, with a specific emphasis on empowering youth gender champions to effectively engage with male youth.

Objective of the assignment:

• Review the manual on boys’ engagement in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) and make changes by adding, removing, or editing sessions as needed.

• Conduct training for the Patang team to build their perspective of the manual and how to use it effectively.

• Young people between the ages of 17 to 21 years old.

• Youth educators working with adolescents and young people

• Develop a structured framework for reviewing the manual's content, ensuring alignment with the objectives and target audience.

• Thoroughly review the existing content of the manual, assessing its relevance, and effectiveness in conveying SRH concepts to boys.

• Develop and integrate new sessions or modules into the manual, addressing emerging issues or gaps in the existing content. These sessions should have diverse methodologies including game, film (Hindi or Odia language), case studies, and evidence-based.

• Edit the entire manual, incorporating revisions, updates, and new content as per the review findings.

• Based on the finalized manual, conduct a two-day comprehensive training workshop with the Patang senior team members to familiarize them with the content, methodologies, and approaches.
