Urban Management Centre is a dynamic non-profit organization dedicated to fostering sustainable urban development. We are a dynamic team of 90+ professionals ranging across fields like urban planning, software engineering, design, social sciences, and finance. Since 1997, we have been working to strengthen governance and service delivery in urban planning, water sanitation, community engagement, heritage management, mapping, climate change, public health, education, municipal finance, migration, and poverty alleviation and livelihoods.

With a commitment to creating livable and resilient cities, we work collaboratively with various stakeholders to implement innovative solutions that address urban challenges.

We are looking for an Urban Planner with a minimum of 7 years of experience, to be based in Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), Chennai, to support the development of a comprehensive urban planning and climate action integration, climate assessment planning study and development of a framework for mainstreaming climate action in Chennai’s master plan.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Leadership:

• Lead the development and execution of comprehensive urban development programs.

• Provide strategic direction and vision to program teams, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.

• Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture to drive successful program outcomes.

Project Management:

• Manage the end-to-end project lifecycle, including planning, execution, monitoring, and evaluation.

• Develop project plans, timelines, and deliverables in collaboration with project teams.

• Identify and mitigate risks, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Cultivate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including government agencies, community organizations, and funding partners.

• Collaborate with external partners to enhance the impact and reach of urban development programs.

• Represent UMC at conferences, workshops, and other relevant forums.

Quality Assurance:

• Ensure the quality and effectiveness of program deliverables through regular monitoring and evaluation.

• Implement best practices in program management and contribute to organizational learning.

• Reporting and Documentation:

• Prepare comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders, highlighting program achievements, challenges, and lessons learned.

• Maintain accurate documentation of program activities, expenditures, and outcomes.

Qualifications and Skills:

• Master’s degree in urban planning, town planning, environmental planning or a related field.

• Experience in climate change, environmental planning, energy efficiency, water resource management and other environmentally responsive projects is a must.

• Proven experience of a minimum of 7 years.

• Proficiency in Tamil and English languages is a must.

• Strong understanding of master planning principles, sustainability, and community development.

• Experience of working closely and/ or being embedded with urban local bodies, development authorities, regional metropolitan authorities, town planning offices and state departments of urban development will be an added advantage.

• Excellent project management skills, including budgeting, monitoring, and evaluation.

• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills for effective stakeholder engagement.

• Ability to think strategically, solve problems, and make informed decisions.

• Familiarity with the urban development landscape and emerging trends.
