Job Description

We are recruiting for an exciting research intervention on the impact of sexual violence on the mobility, education, and on the access to resources of rural women and girls in two districts of Gujarat.

About SWATI:

The Society for Women’s Action and Training Initiatives (SWATI) works to secure the rights of women and other marginalized citizens in Gujarat ( www.swati.org.in). Ending VAW is a primary goal of SWATI whose approach is based on the premise that VAW has several dimensions and requires multi- pronged prevention. SWATI achieves its goals by building women’s leadership, engaging men and boys, community outreach, setting up alternative dispute resolution systems, enabling access to counselling, legal aid and survivor support services, and working with the public health system and with GPs to enhance their responsiveness to VAW. Through these means it services and reaches out to a population of over two hundred thousand (200 GPs, and three municipalities) in two districts. In the last four years, SWATI has gained in-depth experience working with GPs on VAW, Mahila Gram Sabha and safety audits. It carries out research studies and develops resources and campaign materials that advance women’s rights and prevent VAW.

Project Description

The Project, named kNOw Fear, looks at rural girls' and women's safety in public spaces and its impact on their lives. The project has a strong data and studies component that is being used to publish, build evidence and advocate. kNOw Fear places mobility and safety in public spaces as being central to the development and progress of women and girls in rural areas. While several safe cities initiatives have been undertaken, not much attention has been paid to rural areas, safety for women and girls is achieved by pushing them into the home. Which in turn impacts their higher education, access to resources, exposure and opportunities and is a major driver for early marriages.
