Locals, NGO join hands for Mahad bridge rescue op

On a day when the Savitri river remained its ferocious best, the messages that travelled across its banks were prompt. Each time something even remotely resembling a human body was spotted, word was passed on to villages downstream, where crowds stood alert on fishing piers.
Mahendra Jangam, a native of Dasgaon village, 10 km from Mahad, received a phone call informing him of a possible sighting at 4 pm, from a friend upstream. ?We can?t say for sure whether it is a human body. Yesterday there was a false alarm over a cow carcass,? he said.
Jangam and his fellow villagers have become the primary sources of information in the absence of the Indian Navy and Coast Guard amid torrential rainfall. Operations of the National Disaster Force were also largely subdued due to a dangerously rising river and 87 mm of rainfall in Mahad by the time they called of operations.
