Fifty children undertook a two-week march to Mumbai to demand the setting up of a residential school for children of farmers who had committed suicide. The children started the march from Sindhkhed Raja in Buldhana on January 11. It culminated in Mumbai on Saturday. In the past two weeks, the children have traveled 14 districts, urging farmers not to commit suicide.
?We want the state government to allow us to set up a residential school for the children of the dead farmers or they should take care of their education,? said Trimbak Gaikwad, convenor of Adhartirth Adharashram, the NGO which organised the march. It is based in Trimbakeshwar in Nashik and is helping 366 children of such farmers.
The demand for setting up the residential school was placed before BJP city unit president and legislator Ashish Shelar who met the delegation and assured help, besides announcing monetary help of Rs 4 lakh. The children also asked Shelar to convey their demands to CM Fadnavis. He said, ?I have talked about your issue to the CM who has said that the government was working to improve the lives of the farmers and had taken some good decisions. I will take this demand to him and ask him to look at the issue on humanitarian grounds. If required, we will either amend or frame new rules to allow you to set up the residential school.?Financially, it is very difficult to run the NGO. We do not get any government aid. We have to spend around Rs 80-90,000 per year. Most of the farmers who committed suicide in Vidarbha and Marathwada are from the Maratha community. The rules do not allow us to set up a residential school for the students from open category,? Gaikwad said. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/50-children-march-from-buldhana-to-mumbai-urge-farmers-not-to-commit-suicide/#sthash.dcYiqqtN.dpuf
