List of suicide helplines in India

V Rohith, a Dalit PhD scholar committed suicide on Sunday, leading to protests across Hyderabad Central University. Rohith, 26, a Dalit University of Hyderabad Phd student was suspended three months ago after student groups clashed on the campus. Hailing from Guntur, Rohith was a second year research scholar in the science and technology department, who took his life because he leaving a suicide note behind, which says: ?I am not hurt at this moment. I am not sad. I am just empty. Unconcerned about myself. That?s pathetic. And that?s why I am doing this.?
This incident has thrust suicide back into the limelight. Every 40 seconds a life is lost through suicide, according to WHO data. More suicides occur between 18 and 45, which is the most productive age group of our society. According to statistics, as displayed on www.aasra.info:
? Every 3 seconds a person attempts to die.
? Suicide is one of the top three causes of death among the young in the age group of 15-35 years.The psychological, social and financial impact of suicide on the family and the society is immeasurable.
? About 1 lakh people die by suicide in India every year.
? Each suicide leaves at least 6 people devastated.
? 6 lakhs people become survivors every year in India.
? Suicide estimates suggest fatalities worldwide could rise to 1.5 million by 2020.
