THOSE who knew Rubina Ali as a child might blame her faith in fairy tale endings on the Hollywood movie she starred in, which swept her up from a Mumbai slum to the studios and then to the Academy Awards in January 2009. Nearly seven years later, her faith that she is destiny?s child remains intact notwithstanding her somewhat humdrum life now in suburban Nallasopara, 60 km from Mumbai. ?Har ladki ka sapna hota hai heroine banna,? Rubina announces, perfectly wing-tipped eyes sparkling. ?I definitely want to be in the movies.?
Nine years old when they were selected from among over 300 children for the film adaptation of Vikas Swarup?s novelQ and A, Rubina and her former fellow resident of Bandra?s Garib Nagar slum, Azharuddin Ismail featured in the media through 2008 and 2009, first for their incredible journey from Garib Nagar to the silver screen, then over allegations by their families that they were poorly paid for their work in the film. Then, in March 2011, when a fire destroyed nearly 400 shanties in Garib Nagar, Rubina was back in the headlines, pictured sifting through the burnt ruins of her home for memorabilia from her 2009 trip to the Academy Awards. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/cities/mumbai/rewind-years-later-slumdog-child-stars-rubina-and-azhar-still-have-a-lifeline/#sthash.JAUntpv2.dpuf
