It took a lot of courage for these women to take on the members of their own caste and the self-proclaimed heads of the jaat panchayats. These women have shown the way to others how the mighty could be brought down to the knees through sheer resolve.
City-based NGO Pratisaad Bahuuddehshiya Sanstha on Tuesday felicitated these five women on the occasion of International Women's Day for their courage. TOI takes a look at their stories of courage:
Sonitai Bhore Forced to flee home, Bhore is an example of how the jaat panchayat could be forced to eat a humble pie. Belonging to the 'Gondhali' samaj in Shelu taluka of Parbhani district, Bhore said her parents had taken Rs 80,000 from a couple of people from her community and repaid the same.But the panchayat suddenly demanded Rs 7 lakh from and threatened to ostracise them. "We came to Nashik at our in-laws place and filed a police complaint. As a result, the panchayat decided to abolish the system itself," Bhore said.
