It is not just during the kite-flying season that birds dwelling in urban areas are under threat. The continuing heat wave too is taking a toll on city birds.
In the last two weeks, over 50 cases of sick birds needing assistance have been reported by bird rescuers. Though many bird species like dove, house sparrow and Asian Koel are getting hit by the rising temperatures, the worst affected are the house swifts as this is their nesting season.
In some cases, birds could not be given immediate and proper treatment due to lack of awareness among masses. Observing this, city-based NGO Wild-CER has started a special critical care unit at Katol Road for birds affected with heat stroke.
"Due to rise in temperature, natural water sources dry up in most of the urban areas. With scarcity of water and soaring heat, birds find it difficult to maintain their body temperature," informed founder director of Wild-CER, Dr Bahar Baviskar.
