Maharashtra has the highest number of drug-related suicides in the country. With 1,372 deaths, it accounts for 37.6 per cent of the total 3,647 suicides in the country linked to drug abuse and addiction. Next is Tamil Nadu with 552 such deaths.
?The National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) has informed that as per data collected from states/UTs during 2014, a total of 1,372 people in Maharashtra, 552 in Tamil Nadu, 475 in Kerala and 305 in Madhya Pradesh committed suicides due to drug abuse/addiction, accounting for 37.6 per cent, 15.1 per cent, 13 per cent and 8.4 per cent (respectively) of such suicides in the country (3,647 suicides),? Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Vijay Sampla told the Lok Sabha earlier this week.
