The state public works department (PWD) allegedly misappropriated at least 38 crore in a Buckingham Canal widening project worth 78 crore, a study by NGO Arappor Iyakkam has said.
Partnering with Magasool Trust, 150 social activists and residents' welfare associations, Arappor Iyakkam carried out an audit of the city's waterways along Villivakkam, Pallikaranai, Moulivakkam, Pallavaram and Chromepet over the past four months.
Following the floods that engulfed the city in 2005, 633 crore was allotted to improve waterways, of which the 13km stretch of the Buckingham Canal from Pallikaranai to Muttukadu was to be widened from 20m to 100m. Arappor Iyakkam convener Jayaram Venkatesan said, "Widening was carried out only along 4.5km of the 13km stretch."
