Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI)/ Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) aims to provide medical assistance without any kind of discrimination including offer medical assistance during natural and manmade disasters through establishment of healthcare centers, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to provide strategic input on relevant medical treatment options in India.

PURPOSE OF POST:

Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population

FUNCTIONAL AND HIERARCHICAL LINES

Hierarchically to Nursing Activity Manager

Functionally accountable to Nursing Team Supervisor

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.

• Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.

• Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit

• Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary

• Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization

• Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration

• Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.

• Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorization, etc.)

• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.

• Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures

CONTEXT SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:

General responsibilities and tasks :

• Assist in diagnosis, treatment and care of advanced HIV, DS-DRTB and other medical conditions in GGSH:

• Work closely with other members of medical team staff (MDs for triage and patient flow, Counselors, Health Promoter, Lab Technicians and Medical Data Processing Officer) to ensure quality medical care and professional confidentiality is respected.

• Specific responsibilities and tasks :

• OPD and triage : Ensure and follow proper triage of all patients according to project protocol

• Following medical prescriptions and recommendations (delegated role)

• Assisting the doctors in the ward round and informing them of the progress of each patient

• Assisting the doctors during certain health care activities if necessary,

• Applying the doctor’s therapeutic decisions whilst following health care protocols (e.g. inserting gastric tubes, urine collectors, etc.).

• Explaining what is happening to patients (+/- accompanying persons) and educating them about their illnesses. Explaining the treatment given and providing any advice required.

• Ticking off and counter-signing treatments given to patients in their files.

• Assist in referring patients to appropriate facilities (Imaging, District Hospital, tertiary Hospital when needed), including the follow up of these patients.

Follow up of patients in the wards :

• To provide and ensure correct nursing care of the HIV patients who are under treatment with MSF and assist doctors in the care, procedure and treatment of the patients

• To provide correct nutritional screening, drug dispensary, give IV fluids and injections to advanced HIV patients according to prescriptions and protocols

• To attend and ensure the implementation of correct protocols concerning follow up of the HIV/VL patients

• To provide instant emergency treatment to critically ill cases in consensus patients with doctors.

• Participate actively in medical rounds and provide the updated information about patients’ status

• To observe and ensure correct follow-up of patients.

• Perform rapid laboratory tests according to MSF and other protocols (MOH, international recommendations) when needed and confirm the result with doctors on duty.

• Respects the principles of aseptic technics and sterilisation.

• Participate in meeting and conferences when required, to facilitate - medical/nursing training sessions, both internally and externally.

• Participate and give correct health education messages to patients and their attendants. Specifically giving appropriate information about HIV, TB and Kala Azar among other HIV related diseases? signs & symptoms, correct treatment; follow up, nutrition, and prevention.

• To respect and promote medical ethics.

• Give support to the laboratory and activities when needed.

• Help the patients to meet their daily needs.

• Maintain privacy to the patients and keep confidentiality of the patients

• Able to go for home visits to provide palliative care along with the medical and supporting teams.

• Listening to patients’ complaints and passing them on to the doctor.

• Provide quality nursing care and able to recognise patients conditions and inform doctor accordingly

Managing medicines/pharmacy materials :

• Carrying out stock takes of medicines and materials

• Noting the daily consumption and placing an order if necessary

• Sterilize used equipment according to DWBI protocol sterilization and guarantee the proper sterilization process is being done,

• Dispensing drugs according to prescriptions with proper explanation

• Informing the departmental supervisor of the various needs

• Ensure proper and rational/careful use, check quarterly and monthly inventory of biomedical equipment and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning and miss placed.

• Report to focal nurse of any irregularities, shortage or damage of materials

• Ensure that medical and care kits are refilled on a regular basis

• To understand, maintain and improve the MSF medical stock management systems.

• Handing over stock cards of medicines and material at every shift change

• To ensure that the daily consumption is in line with stock and place an order if necessary

Data and reporting :

• Accurate filling of all required medical forms in the patient file and collection of clinical data as required

• Participating in data collection with the departmental manager

• Filling in the register book/patient card, noting every pertinent information that happened during the shift and any changes in prescription or patients to be followed up

• Maintaining registers and files up to date at all times, entering all pertinent information

• Filling out nurse liaison forms during the transfer of a patient

• Ensuring to give oral/written handover at every shift change, drawing attention to any notable events during the shift

• Keep proper records and ensure their safe custody.

• Record the required medical data accurately and collaborate in the reports.

• Participating in departmental and project meetings.

• Participating in data collection for the operational research studies executed in the project

• To respect and promote absolute confidentiality of any information related to HIV patients.

Other:

• Support clinic/community activities with any additional task assigned.

• Participate in clinical as well as medical team meetings.

• Ensure IPC protocols are in place and address the safety needs of the patients

• Performing any other professional tasks as required by the Supervisors.

• Maintains a flexible approach and responds to the needs of the project even outside of this job description.

• To assist in the assessment of humanitarian needs and emergency interventions arising in the region and if needed, showing flexibility, adaptability and commitment.

• To respect MSF internal regulations, the contract and the present job description.

REQUIREMENTS :

• Education:

Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma Desirable Bachelor in Science of Nursing

• Experience:

Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGOs

Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting

• Languages: Local language is essential. Mission language desirable

• Knowledge:

Essential basic mathematics and use of measuring equipment

Desirable computer literacy (word, excel)

Desirable ability to do basic repairs
